What’s the league desk in La Liga this season?

Barcelona suddenly find themselves in the thick of the battle for a top-four spot in the Primera Division after struggling past Elche 3-2 on Saturday.

The Camp Nou side took a hold of the game early on by scoring twice in the first 20 minutes through La Masia graduates. First, Ferran Jutlga opened the scoring but his effort was upstaged by Gavi’s brilliant solo goal. The 17-year-old spun one defender before drifting past another and firing home.

Barca, however, suffered a meltdown midway through the second half as goals from Tete Morente and Pere Milla within 60 seconds of each other squared the game.

Nico Gonzalez saved Xavi’s side with an emphatic finish into the top corner with five minutes left.

Barca’s victory put the pressure on Atletico Madrid ahead of their tough trip to Sevilla, but Diego Simeone’s men succumbed 2-1 and have now lost three league matches in succession for the first time since 2011.

Atleti turned in an impressive performance but conceded early to Ivan Rakitic and late to Lucas Ocampos as their opponents netted their only two shots on target in the match. In between times, Felipe levelled.

Sevilla drew themselves to within five points of runaway leaders Real Madrid, who will face Cadiz on Sunday.

Real Sociedad, meanwhile, continue to fade after a strong start to the season. They were defeated 3-1 at home by Villarreal and are now sixth.

Rayo Vallecano were Saturday’s big winners as they leapt into the top four thanks to a 2-0 win over Alaves.

The other leading side to be in action on Sunday is Real Betis, who face a tough trip to Athletic Club.

The weekend’s action concludes on Monday, meanwhile, when Valencia meet Levante, who have yet to win a game this season, in their derby encounter.
