The 20th seed, stormed past qualifier Maximilian Marterer, and fellow compatriot Frances Tiafoe easily in the first two rounds. He faced a major challenge against the experienced Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round. Fritz won the first set without dropping a set but Agut took the next two sets and threatened the youngster. But he showed great resilience and fought back brilliantly to win the game 6-0, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
