The Armenian Plateau and the Caucasus have always been at the crossroads of civilization, both geographically and culturally. From ancient times, people have crossed this region, which served as part of the Silk Road, to get from the East to the West and vice versa. The original Armenian name for the country was Hayq, later Hayastan, translated as the “Land of Hayk”. According to legend, Hayk was a great-great-grandson of Noah and according to the tradition, he is the forefather of all the Armenians. Mount Ararat, a sacred mountain for the Armenian people, rising in the center of the Armenian Highland as its highest peak, is traditionally considered the landing place of Noah’s Ark. Official language is Armenian, but Russian is spoken by everybody. Many people, especially in the capital know English, some people know other European languages (French, Italian, Spanish, German etc), Persian (Farsi) etc.In the world there are living total 11 million Armenians but just only 3 million living in their homeland, more than 1 million living in the capital —Yerevan. More than 90% of the population are locals—Armenians.
